Benaraby Landfill Cell Expansion

Big Timber Tree Services was engaged by Gladstone Regional Council to deliver large-scale clearing and grubbing works for a new landfill cell expansion at Benaraby, northwest of Gladstone. The project required the full clearing and grubbing of established scrubland during a period of challenging wet weather. Completing this scope to the civil standard required for a new landfill expansion meant our clearing and grubbing operations had to be precise, fully documented, and delivered within a tight window without delays to the downstream civil works.

The Challenge

The site presented a high volume of established scrub across a significant area, with wet weather conditions limiting effective machinery access across key portions of the clearing zone. The programme window was tight, with downstream civil earthworks contractors committed to start dates that could not move. Environmental obligations — including erosion and sediment controls and clearing boundary compliance — had to be maintained throughout.

Our Approach

We mobilised quickly with the correct plant for the conditions, implemented staged clearing to maximise productive access in wet conditions, and established erosion and sediment controls from day one. Environmental management was handled in-house, with daily inspections and compliance records maintained across the full project duration. Clearing boundaries were pegged, flagged and documented before clearing commenced.

The Solution

The clearing and grubbing scope was completed on programme and within budget. A civil-ready handover was delivered to the principal contractor on schedule, allowing downstream earthworks to commence without delay. Zero environmental incidents were recorded across the project. Full documentation and compliance records were provided at practical completion. Gladstone Regional Council engaged Big Timber on two subsequent projects.
